Cat Eye – Indication Of Femininity

There is close to 400 cat eye styled glasses and sunglasses in our collection, most are 2011 models. How did it happen that this shape suddenly gained so much popularity?

First cat eye sunglasses were introduced in early 1950s. Marlin Monroe wore cat eye eyeglasses during entire “How to Marry a Millionaire” (1953) film. After the movie she adopted the accessory as part of her individual style making it iconic. The trend firmly continued into 60s. Audrey Hepburn wore her cat eye sunglasses during the memorable “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1963). French actress Catherine Deneuve made a number of appearances in her first movies carrying the glasses into late 1960. Thus the trend lived for over 20 years.

During the past couple of years this shape was considered retro and in early 2000th was completely gone. Today designers have given cat eyes a new life to this long lasting trend. Main reason is because they fit nearly any face shape. They can make long face look rounder. Round faces will look more triangular. Perhaps another reason for sudden popularity is that cat eye glasses give a lot of opportunities for color experiment and creative decoration. These iconic glasses can be accompanied with casual wide pants and of course bright lipstick – both current trends that came back from the past.

Historically cat eye glasses had a thick frame and raised angles. Today each designer has their own vision of how it should be. Some are concentrating on a shape, when others are on general silhouette substituting the rest with cat print. This makes glasses look current and updated giving you plenty of choices.
