Joynoelle's Dr. Seuss lookbook

Joynoelle designer Joy Teiken has just released a few photos designed by Brandon Werth that tie into the Dr. Seuss theme for her Spring 2011 collection. Whimsical and adorable, quite simply.

Joynoëlle Spring 2011 lookbook

Designer Joy Teiken has released her Spring 2011 lookbook for her RTW line Joynoëlle, recently revealed at her September 23 show at International Market Square during MNfashion Week. (Here are my runway recaps for l'etoile magazine and Vita.mn.) Let's take a look, shall we?

Darling little confection of a dress. I love the necklace and sleeves, though not crazy about the floral appliques.
Classic Joynoëlle: ultra-feminine, vintage-inspired, and a touch frilly. Again, the floral applique feels a little done at this point, but it is sort of a Joynoëlle trademark. J'adore the shoes, and how the ribbon ties back to the ribbon detail in the dress.
I actually prefer the jacket version to the dress - so flattering and wearable. I'd wear this to work with a black pencil skirt or high-waisted, wide-legged trousers.
My favorite piece of the collection. I LOVE how she used burlap as an upscale textile, and the pale pink and slate gray silk are a great match. The cut of it is just adorable.
Here she's working with the burlap again, and I like how she's weaving the ribbon into it - very innovative. I don't understand why it's pair with this sheer blouse, which in itself is gorgeous but an odd styling choice.
This is the "Cat in the Hat" coat (the collection was said to be inspired by Dr. Seuss). The inspiration here is particularly subtle - the frayed silk ribbon detail is meant to evoke the sketches of Seuss, and it's defintely a successful translation. The collar is also quite whimsical.
Here is the dress version of the coat. The structure of the bust is gorgeous and quite flattering.
Doesn't she look like a little dessert? I think the floral addition is unnecessary, but nitpicking aside a sweet yet dramatic look.
Beautifully done. Love the waffling technique at the bust - she looks like a piece of pie! The skirt softens the effect but it would've been interesting to see an entire fitted cocktail dress incorporating the same waffling technique.
Here's the burlap again in jacket form - as lovely as the dress. The pants, however, are very odd to me. Sheer, polka-dot, and cuffed? I don't get the pants or the pairing with the jacket.
This is...just okay.
Very pretty but nothing exciting.
Here Joy is doing something interesting, taking her knack for creating her own textiles out of various fabrics into separates. The top is successful - the blue and pink are a gorgeous color combination, and the drape is lovely and romatic with just a hint of edge. But the pants are confusing - I don't understand why they cover the feet? It looks hoof-like. Perhaps with the bottoms hacked off they would've worked. Still, exciting to see Joy venture into the world of separates.

Fall 2010 MNfashion Week highlights

The MNfashion Week calendar for Fall 2010 is online!

Some highlights:

September 17: Envision: Artopia at Graves 501 Hotel
This show is produced every season by Ignite Models Inc., and it's always a well-done, professional show. I'm excited to see new fall lines from Calpurnia Peach and Tender Cuts, plus newcomers YQY by Vivian and ArielSimone (all new to the show this year), as well as Envision regulars Jenny Carle, PFT Couture and Russell Bourrienne. Click here for details. (Envision Promo Photo: Sera Sauser)

September 19: Haste Sans Waste fashion show at Honey
I'm on the fence about this one until I hear what designers are involved, but it's definitely a cool idea: "Pantsuits transform to evening gowns, pajamas morph to workout gear and band uniforms transition to elegant bathing suits." Click here for details.

September 23: Crosswalk at Cliché
This was a cute concept when Cliché debuted it last spring - take three of their local designers, parade them through the store, and watch them transform the crosswalk outside onto a catwalk. Designers this time around include up-and-comers Tender Cuts (a personal favorite), Kathryn V. and Niki English. Click here for more details. (Photo: Tender Cuts S/S 2010 by studio kh]

September 23: Joynoelle fashion show at International Market Square
Joy Teiken is one of the more established designers to call Minneapolis home, and we're lucky to have her. Her craftsmanship is unparalleled, and her vintage-inspired design aesthetic continues to expand into edgier territory. This should be one of the more popular shows of MNfashion Week, so tickets should go fast. Click here for more details. (Photo: Joynoelle F/W 2010)

September 24: Pale Rider at MNfashion Atrium
Raul Osorio and Danielle Everine share a good deal aesethetically, but definitely have distinct styles on their own. Osorio is known for incorporating feminine, Grecian draping into tough, militaristic menswear; now we'll see his womenswear for the first time. Danielle Everine, on the other hand, is known for her menswear-inspired womenswear, while incorporating sculptural, fine art elements and highly conceptual garments that still manage to be wearable. Both are ones to watch. Click here for more details. (Photo: Danielle Everine F/W 2010 by Ingrid Werthmann)

September 24: SGMS: Full Fashion Panic at MCAD
The annual fashion portion of the weekend-long anime workshop Schoolgirls and Mobilesuits is produced by steampunk afficionado Samantha Rei (of Blasphemina's Closet), and the show always features the latest in steampunk/Lolita/anime-inspired fashion. It showcases the work of students as well as established designers like Rei. Click here for details. (Photo: Fashion by Blasphemina's Closet)

September 25: Split Personality Launch Party at The Hub Bike Co-Op
The "unusual materials" challenges are always my favorite on Project Runway, so this event featuring garments created with bike parts should be a fun one. Again, no list of designers has been revealed but it should be fun to check out. Click here for details.

And of course, you can get a taste of all of this at Tuesday's MNfashion Week Preview Party at Honey. Click for details (Free, but RSVP required).

Mpls.St.Paul's Shops issue goes online

The brand-new issue of Mpls.St.Paul Magazine's Shops issue is on newstands - digital ones, at least. The annual issue has made its way to a slick, page-turning digital format this year. There's tons of great stuff to read, including a mini history of Minneapolis shopping, local boutique profiles, fashion spreads, and a handy shops guide.

Arts curator/mplsart.com director/fashion designer Emma Berg (in a George Moskal skirt) shares the cover with some other local fashion ladies: Mall of America trend specialist Sara Rogers (in Joynoelle), ShopNBC host Wendi Russo, WCCO-TV anchor Amelia Santaniello, CW Television producer Kristen Aldridge, and Nash Avery Foundation co-founder Angie Wicka. (Is it just me, or do they look awkwardly Photoshopped together?)

Here's Emma in the spread inside, wearing a corset top by Max Lohrbach, pants she designed herself, and Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony shoes from locally-based ShopFatal.com.

Here's Vision model Elle Williams modeling fall fashions, as styled by Mpls.St.Paul fashion editor Melissa Colgan:

MNfashion director and Voltage founder Anna Lee is also profiled in the issue:

Glamorama ladies in Joynoelle

I had the honor of getting to wear a Joynoelle piece to Macy's Glamorama earlier this month - and I wasn't the only one. Melissa Colgan (Mpls.St.Paul Magazine fashion editor), Sara Rogers (Mall of America trend specialist) and Raina Hein (America's Next Top Model runner-up) also donned looks by designer Joy Teiken.
