Lingerie? Outerwear? Does it Matter?

images via Andrew Woffinden

Isn't this the prettiest crossover of lingerie as outerwear?  The line that divides the two is almost nonexistent here as one blends seamlessly into the other.  With the right essentials (hello beautiful leopard purse in that last pic) and a little creativity the most stunning looks can be created.  Granted, we're not necessarily going out of our house in most of these outfits, but they do provide a great foundation that you can build upon (for instance a pair of pants might be nice).  We love the use of bodysuits, leggings and high-waist panties; all of which are key trends in the lingerie industry this past year!

Lingerie & Photography: Jimmy Backius

images by photographer Jimmy Backius

It's so wonderful when we discover photos that are absolutely perfect for posting on our site!  These Jimmy Backius images have just enough lingerie-inspired looks to make us feel inspired.  The first picture (with the Hermes belt) is so lovely, and happens to be a look we could piece together with a few pieces we already own (gotta love that!).  Another favorite is the ruffled bodysuit (at least that's what it appears to be) and the full lace bodysuit which actually looks quite classy.  We're not sure where this series was published otherwise we would love to provide designer credits.  The only brands we could easily spot were the Miu Miu cat-print satin clogs and the Hermes belt.   For more work by Swedish photographer Jimmy Backius click here.

Lingerie as Outerwear - by Serge Leblon

in each picture the model is wearing a bra or bra top by Jean Paul Gaultier
Serge Leblon for ELLE magazine, model Yulia Kharlapanova

Really this entire post is more of an excuse to post that first picture...isn't it so classic?! Perhaps we should set up a Tumblr account for these fantastic images we find and wish to share. Nonetheless, the Elle magazine editorial had a few more lingerie as outerwear looks that rounded out our post, and also had us impressed with the latest designs of Jean Paul Gaultier. Granted, Gaultier has a history of designing lingerie-inspired looks, so it's no surprise we're impressed.

Sexy Neutrals

images via here. Jodi Barima, copyright 2010

Bodysuits, waist-cinchers and ruffles are right on-trend in designer Jodi Barima's latest collection (or at least we think it's the latest...no dates on this group). In any event, a bit of internet searching led us to this Ghana-born/London-educated designer who we had never heard of, but her work is quite relevant in terms of Spring's latest trends. What's interesting is that in these images we see a basic nude bodysuit that is dressed up with striking accessories; which just goes to show how a little lingerie detailing and accessorizing goes a long way. As far as the pictures go, the model's wild red hair against the soft color palette is quite striking! We wish we could find more about Jodi Barima's work, but we're certainly pleased that at the very least we founder these.

Lingerie-Inspired Outerwear (Again!)

This photo shoot, appropriately titled Inside Out, is the latest in a host of editorial features on the innerwear as outerwear trend. This is a wonderful interpretation of the trend and not overtly sensual as one might think. The mix of the cozy 3.1 Phillip Lim sweaters with delicate details of a pretty bra suggest a dressed-down look for home that's quite easy to put together. When it comes down to it, the lingerie as outerwear trend is all about appropriately layering pieces to create a dynamic look. We've seen it dressed-up on the runway (a la Dior) and more realistically shown for how we would wear it here.
We particularly like the semi-sheer Ports 1961 boudoir jacket..very structured and elegant.

Lingerie-Inspired Outerwear: Rachel McAdams

Dolce & Gabbana dress with Christian Louboutin shoes...perfection

Rachel McAdams for Vogue by Mario Testino

Lingerie as outerwear has never seemed more tasteful! A sexy slip for a dress, a lacy Dior bustier top and a sheer dress with a built-in bra; our version of heaven.
Actress Rachel McAdams was recently featured in Vogue as photographed by Mario Testino. These pictures are fresh, vibrant and wonderfully inspiring in their elegance. We also love how this is the most realistic interpretation of the lingerie as outerwear trend that we've seen in a while. This is a look we would proudly wear!

Lingerie or Ready-to-Wear?

photo by Steven Meisel Models: Jessica Stam, Heather Marks, Lisa Cant, Carol Trentini

This photo certainly intrigued us, and raised the question "is it lingerie or outerwear?". We don't know the designer behind these pieces, nor do we know the magazine this came from, so it's all speculation at this point.
This reminds us of so many of our customers who shop at Faire Frou Frou and mention that some of our lingerie looks like ready-to-wear...and it is! With a bit of creativity and stylish flair, you can make almost any look work to your desired effect. That's the beauty of fashion these days. We make our own lingerie work as ready-to-wear as often as possible, and why not, it's too pretty to cover up!
