Di Medlock in Marie Claire magazine
Minnesota native Di Medlock is certainly making waves after her move to NYC to work for Exhale Mind Body Salon. After being named "Best Brow Guru" by New York Magazine last month, Marie Claire used Di (my former partner in local stylist collective Eclecticoiffeur) as an skincare expert source for an article in their forthcoming April issue on spring skincare tips. Di Medlock named "Best Brow Guru" by New York Magazine
New York just learned with Minneapolis already knew: Di Medlock is the undisputed queen of the brow wax. The former Minneapolitan (and my one-time co-hort in stylist collective Eclecticoiffeur) was just named Best Brow Guru by New York Magazine in their best-of issue.

They say: "Whatever your brows’ affliction (overplucked, underplucked, there’s only one of them), Exhale’s new guru Di Medlock is poised to doctor it right up. After diagnosing the arches, Medlock uses a combination of trimming, tweezing, threading, and/or waxing to nurse brows back to health. She also prescribes eyebrow conditioner and a take-home plan in order to break bad plucking habits between visits. On the issue of tails, for instance, Medlock shows clients where the outer ends of their arches should stop (premature tails are apparently an epidemic). And, at $35 a shaping session, there’s little temptation to take matters into your own hands."
In other local-stylists-making-waves-in-NYC news, Sam Brocato Salon, where former Minneapolitan (and one-time Eclecticoiffeur-ette) Laura Boland works, was also named the best salon for hair straightening in New York by New York Magazine.

Calpurnia Peach calls it quits
Hot off the news that Calpurnia Peach co-designer Ashley Wokasch has been spending time in New York and collaborating with designer Rachel Antonoff comes the announcement that Calpurnia Peach is officially no longer.

Laura Boland styles Claire Danes
[Credit: Stephen Lovekin / Getty]Former Minneapolis hairstylist Laura Boland got the chance to style hair for actress Claire Danes in New York last week for a red carpet screening of Biutiful. Boland, my former partner in Eclecticoiffeur styling collective and longtime Juut employee, is now working at Sam Brocato Salon in Manhatten. On the experience, she said, "She was very quiet and shy...very awkward, but very nice," and "It was definitely surreal and exciting..for i have always adored her."
Kelsy Osterman does New York Fashion Week, pt 3
Kelsy Osterman, my former co-hort in Eclecticoiffeur who's now working with Cutler Salon in New York, finishes up her New York Fashion Week shows with Odd Molly, Betsey Johnson, Graeme Armour, Daniel Vosovic, and Tory Burch. She sent me her full backstage report.
On Odd Molly: "Lead by Brent Lawler. Super fun. Glued in colored extensions and braided them in. We pulled some of the pieces out while braiding to create this amazing effect."

On Betsey Johnson: "What a crazy backstage. Think Candy, balloons, champagne, florecent everything, and free for all hair dos.. Omg amazing."

On Graeme Armour: "At this show, lead by Rudi Lewis, you had to know your stuff. He is a fabulous hairdresser with very high standards. In this hairstyle, we created three chignon's to create a square shape. Making something square on an already round shape can be very difficult. After getting through lack of power, litterally electricity, we had only about an hour to bust 17 looks out. Long story short.. It was hecktic!! But check it out. What a beautiful innovative shape."

Kelsy Osterman at New York Fashion Week, part 2
Hairstylist Kelsy Osterman - a Minnesota native and former member of my styling collective Eclecticoiffeur - is at New York Fashion Week styling shows for Cutler Salon in NYC. She had another update and backstage pix for me from Spring 2011 New York Fashion Week shows for Rebecca Taylor, Gary Graham, Patrick Ervell, Rachael

On Rebecca Taylor: "Did that this morning at Lincoln Center. Super fun fuzzy buns."

On Gary Graham: "Awesome show. We put lots of product and texture onto the the hair and tied it into a super low ponytail. Then cut the shit out of lots and lots of wigs and placed them on the models heads creating a faux pixie look. Combined with the pony they looked like rouge hard ass girls with rockin' mullets."

On Rachael Antonoff: "Rachael Antonoff is a young lady with fresh youthful but strong looks. Her presentation took place in an eccentric townhouse in the wonderful west village. The idea was to create a child's paradise with forts, trampolines, and dolls that the models were frozen ad if interacting with the set. Super sweet pastels were used as the color palette with stripes and solids. Sort of Annie Larson meets Calpurnia Peach. The hair was easy and fun. We started the style with adding lots of texture. Then we did a side french braid and finished it off with a bun in the back. We then disheveled the whole thing... Which I love!"

On Tadashi: "They chose to do a presentation. They made a set of sorts and just placed the models in it so press can come and check out the whole line. Lots of design houses are choosing to go this route. It seems to save money."

Kelsy Osterman does New York Fashion Week
My former business partner in Eclecticoiffeur (and Minnesota native) Kelsy Osterman has been taking New York Fashion Week by storm for the past couple of years running, via Cutler Salon. So far this fall, she's worked backstage doing hair at shows for Nicholas K and Project Runway Season 6 winner Irina Shabayeva. She shared some exclusive photos and deets with me today.

On Nicholas K: "This was the official start of fashion week. Very cool. The New York Times were filming it because it kicked off Fashion Week at Lincoln Center.
Side fishtail braids.. Always cute. It was a military inspired line with tons of drappy layered muted greens, greys, and leather. Check out the collection photos. Really cool stuff. I wanted most of it."
On Irina: "She did a presentation.. Not a show. She actually did all gowns. Kind of unexpected coming from her. The venue was a beautiful bar in Chelsea. The models we up on pedistals . Really gorgeous with the big gowns billowing down to the floor.
Rodney Cutler (owner of Cutler Salon) was the lead."
Expect more to come from Kelsy before Fashion Week ends.

Catching up with Eclecticoiffeur's Kelsy and Di
[Photo by Corey Melton]I just ran across some lovely images that happened to be styled by my former business partners and collaborators in Eclecticoiffeur, hairstylist Kelsy Osterman and makeup artist Di Medlock, who have since both made the move to New York. Kelsy has been busy working at Cutler Salon, assisting on major editorial spreads, and working New York and Miami Fashion Weeks (not to mention the occasional visit to Courtney Love's hotel to do her hair.) Di has been working and traveling for Exhale Mind Body Spa, overseeing the waxing department across the U.S.
The lovely shoot features fashion and accessories by New York-based Gina Schiappacasse, also a fashion illustrator who is originally from Minneapolis herself. The shoot was done on NYU Mews Street back in July and was featured on Schiappacasse's blog.
